Improving seed production technology of Norway spruce seed orchards

PN-III-P2-2.1-BG-2016-0465

Designing silvicultural systems by using certified and tested reproduction materials is regulated in Romania in accordance with the European Union requirements and OECD Scheme (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development).

Seed orchards are aimed at producing seeds with superior genetic characteristics. Currently, these special crops have a potential superior value, because the genitor trees used in their generation were selected according to phenotypic criteria.

Thus, validating the genetic superiority is necessary, as it requires the determination of the genetic diversity level in clones from every orchard. The National Forest Administration (Regia Națională a Pădurilor) - Romsilva manages 58,7 ha of Norway spruce seed orchards – the most often used species in afforestation operations in the mountain area of Romania. These orchards can produce seeds to ensure the establishment of Norway spruce crops. As they have not been genetically tested so far, the proposed research aims to improve the seed production technology by embedding the data related to the genetic diversity level, an important parameter in creating productive and stable crops. The genetic assessment will be performed using DNA markers, and the sample will consist of four clonal seed orchards and two natural populations for control. Furthermore, updated information will be provided regarding the current clonal structure and the spring phenology. Also, to achieve cost efficiency for RNP-Romsilva, the economic agent will be provided with the scientific support related to the establishment of the minimum number of clones from which the seeds will be harvested, while ensuring an accepted minimum level of genetic diversity. The technological transfer will allow the economic agent to deliver seeds on the foreign market at a superior level of certification of their genetic value.

The establishment of a Norway spruce seed orchard within Bihor Forestry Department consisting of 30 clones originating from the ecological regions E2, E3, and C1

contract no. 4886/ 24.04.2018

Establishing a Norway spruce seed orchard (30 clones) to produce genetically improved seeds for the ecological regions E 2, E 3, and C 1: Cloning by means of grafting 30+ Norway spruce trees and the replication of each one into circa 120 ramets used to create a seed orchard on a land area of 8 ha in Bihor Forestry Department, Sudrigiu Forest District.

Mobilizing and Monitoring Climate Positive Efforts in Forests and Forestry

The general objective of the FORCLIMIT project is to create and provide the necessary foundation for efficient strategies of reducing forest emissions.

FORCLIMIT has three sub-objectives:

1) to analyse and propose improvements in the mechanism of accounting for emission reductions in a framework of internationally unified policies that will facilitate a consistent account of forest emissions in various countries;

2) to analyse the economic strategies and the existing policies in motivating land owners to contribute in reducing forest emissions and the chain of custody for wood;

3) to contribute to the current system of measuring, reporting, and verifying (MRV) (which relates to a national estimation of emissions), the possibility of improved small-scale estimation, e.g. stand, management unit, as well as the assessment of economic measures and existing policies. This is proved in three case studies from three different countries: Holland, Romania, and Sweden.

Development of a European Study Programme: International Master’s Degree for the Environmental Security Sector (ENSEC)

Environmental degradation is caused by climate change, demographic growth, and the irrational use of resources. Besides the determinant physical factors, an important role is played by society’s lack of knowledge, more specifically, lack of education in the field.

The project aims to develop and implement innovative modules for master’s programmes, as education is an integral part of the global mission. ENSEC was created to anticipate the future requirements in terms of competences, and to improve cooperation opportunities between higher education, professional training, industry, as well as knowledge exchange and transfer. The goal is to create a flexible study programme, in accordance with the needs of the students and companies in related domains, by means of a modular programme which will convey innovation, experience, and value.
