The Laboratory for Design, Modeling and Research of Vehicle Systems and Components is equipped with graphics stations capable of complex data processing in the shortest time.
• Advanced propulsion systems solutions
The infrastructure is concentrated around the two internal combustion engine test stands: the single-cylinder internal combustion engine test stand and the poly-cylinder internal combustion engine test stand.
The equipment is made up of:
- The test cell- is the engine test cell within which the studied engine can be cooled down to temperatures of -30 ° C in order to perform cold start tests on engines.
- AVL 570 single-cylinder motors test stand- This stand has been made and developed as a flexible modular system. Features: Torque: 180 Nm from 0 to 3000 rpm; Power: 58 kW from 3000 to 8000 rpm.
- AVL 5405 single cylinder spark ignition engine
- Petrol Direct Injection Fuel Pump- is a high-pressure pump with a fuel circuit, a direct injector for the direct injection and the required automation, a conditioning valve, and the power grid.
- Engine Mass Balancing System- Two adjustable shafts for engine operation with minimal vibrations.
- Intake system conversion kit by multipoint injection in the valve gate.
- Unprocessed piston for direct injection- Non-combustion chamber piston which can be machined in any configuration for the direct injection.
- 514 GDI Topworks Optical Kit- The Clear Quartz Cylinder of the optical unit allows of optical analyses and studies of air movement inside the cylinder, of blend formation and combustion in the cylinder.
- Mirror system for the optical unit- for the visualization of the processes in the combustion chamber.
- Engine Control Unit (AVL ETU 427)- Full Automatic System for Injection, Load and Fuel / Engine Cycle control, and PC Engine Run Chart.
- Oil and Coolant Conditioning Unit - Unit 577
- AVL fuel consumption measurement system- FlexFuel Type = Type 7351CME (ME = methanol / ethanol) - Suitable for Otto and Diesel engines, gasoline, diesel, biofuels and blends of up to 100% alcohols, biomass fuels.
- AVL temperature control system- FlexFuel Model = Type 753CH M100 (with heating).
- Overcharging system(Compressor unit and Boost unit)

- Lambda Meter System LA4- Lambda Meter Excess Air Coefficient Determination Device; dosing measurement for the spark ignition engine. It can be used for different fuels.

- AVL PUMA Open Testbed Automation stand software- PUMA Open is a dedicated program for the operation of the stand for single-cylinder motors.
- AVL FIRE ® Engine- AVL FIRE is a software used successfully in research to optimize processes in internal combustion engines from a thermodynamical point of view.
- AVL BOOST- Software that allows simulations of processes in internal combustion engines.
- Gas analyzer - The GA-21plus model features: O2and CO, NO, SO2, H2S, H2, calculation NOx and CO2 sensors, PM particulate test; sampling probe; PC software.
The specific transmission infrastructure for vehicles is concentrated around the MAHA dynamometer stand, LPS 3000 R100 / 1. It consists of: a set of rollers located in protective housings, self-supporting, with electrodynamic brake located on the right side of the dynamometer (relative to the driving direction) and a bar with pneumatic lifting (actuation) for locking the rollers and easy entry / exit and comfortable. It offers the possibility to test sports cars with low ground clearance.

- Stand functions - High level of flexibility in use due to the wide variety of operation; Operating modes, covering all areas of application; Measurement of static power at constant speed; Static measurement of power at constant speed; Static measurement of power at constant traction force; Dynamic power measurement with adjustable acceleration; Towing power measurement.
- Specific facilities - Tachometer with more than ten selectable points for tests; Measurement of the distance traveled during the test; Stopwatch function for measuring acceleration between selected speed markers; Load running simulation, with programmable load profile; Simulation of running / driving program regimes, with programmable speed profile; Storing programmed profiles in the database; Remote control, for complete control of the dynamometer directly inside the vehicle.
- Software - Continuous graphical display and recording of up to 16 selectable parameters, per measurement cycle; In addition to the current performance measurement cycle, the stored data from max. three cycles can be analyzed and compared for optimal comparability during calibration tests; Dual display for engine speed and vehicle speed, as well as display of the current oil temperature, ensuring permanent and constant control of key parameters while performing performance measurements; Determination of wheel power, lost power, engine power and torque; Display for engine power and speed, speed and traction during simulation cycles.

Hydraulic system test stand:
- AMESim software- LMS Image.Lab AMESim, 2 D system simulation - The software package is used to model, simulate, analyze and predict on the performance of mechanical systems.
- Catia V5- The software component serves for designing vehicle components
- Fluent 6.0- CFD - The software package is used to model, simulate, visualize and predict the fluid flow, mass and heat transfer, and chemical reactions, as well.
• Road safety, accident analysis and reconstruction
The infrastructure is centred around the two research directions, i.e. accident reconstruction and road safety.
The equipment is made up of:
- Humanoid anthropometric test device - prototype, consisting of interchangeable components connected by joints. The manikin is intended for the study the effects of vehicle collisions on the human body.
- DJI Phantom 3 Professional drone - is a complex aerial filming system designed to provide images of incredible quality and easy-to-use intuitive and easy to use for active recording of experimental tests.
- GPS / INS system with single or dual data acquisition antenna - Hardware and software modules for data acquisition using GPS receivers and accelerometers. It can receive data from one or two GPS receivers simultaneously, in the form of NMEA-0183 sequences. The functional variants are: 1xGPS, 2xGPS, 1xGPS + INS.
- Pendulum stand for impact simulation - The stand allows the installation of manikin components and impact testing with exterior or interior elements of the vehicle specific to the impact of the occupant with the passenger compartment or the impact of the pedestrian vehicle at speeds between 5-35 km / h.
- Ramp type stand for impact simulation - The stand allows the simulation of the front, side and rear impact of the vehicle with occupant, at speeds between 5-45 km / h, the study of the occupant's movement, the acquisition of speed and acceleration parameters and the testing of safety of the vehicle.
- Service brake remote control drive systems - The system consists of a pneumatic drive cylinder, directly through a rod that presses the brake pedal. It is equipped with a cylinder-tank of compressed air, working at a pressure of max. 12 bar. The drive solenoid valve is controlled by remote control, allowing other automation modes.
- Remote control mechanical steering systems - The system consists of an electronic system and electric motor that drives a chain drive on the steering column. The system allows the steering to be operated by remote control, up to a distance of 100 m.
- Barrier of optical sensors - to control the start of the trigger signal of the various mechanisms used in experimental testing
- Asphalt road with a width of 6 m and a length of 200 m, impact pillarφ≈0.15 and height of 1.15 m, concrete block of 2x2x1.5 m3overturning ramp - it allows visibility measurements during the day and night, conducting dynamic tests, collision between vehicles, vehicle-pedestrian, vehicle-cyclist, overturning the vehicle.
- Vehicle towing and releasing systems - The cable can be connected to the towed vehicle via a chain and to the towing vehicle via a manually operated quick release system.
- Speed limiters - Speed limiters are effective in reducing the speed of cars without affecting the suspension of vehicles. These devices are made of rubber or plastic. Depending on the size of the module, the devices require a speed reduction between 15 and 35 km / h.
Software Components:
- PC‐CRASH - Software used to analyze and reconstruct traffic accidents, to define post-collision trajectories, to calculate the pre and post impact speed, to simulate and visualize accidents dynamics. It allows the acquisition of dynamic and kinematic data, uses complex mathematical calculation models and emits graphical, numerical and visual results.
- PC - Rect - Software that allows rectification of calibrated digital samples, performs complex photogrammetric analyzes of surfaces, allows geometric measurements in plan and space, allows 2D assembly and concatenation of multiple photo samples on the surface, allows analysis and determination of visibility on overnight calibrated samples.
- Poket Daq Analyser - Acceleration data acquisition and processing programme that allows the loading of "bin" files generated by the PIC DAQ DSD acquisition system, generates digital graphs of recorded values, allows calibration and filtering of values, allows data optimization according to the center mass of the analyzed part.
- Video-hispeed sample analysis programme – allows the identification of the kinematics of the parts mounted on the moving test equipment.
• Road Traffic Management and Sustainable Urban Mobility
The infrastructure is made up of the equipment and software needed to record road traffic flows and air and noise pollution. The equipment is:
- Gas analyzer - The GA-21plus model features: O2and CO, NO, SO2, H2S, H2, calculation NOx and CO2 sensors, PM particulate test; sampling probe; PC software.
- SDR traffic classifiers - They use Doppler radars, at 24,125 GHz, for vehicle detection.
- „MULTIRAE IR / PGM-54” GAS DETECTOR - portable gas analyzer - O2si CO, NOx, SO2, H2S, CH4, COV, CO2 sensors.
- AIRFLOW MODEL TA460 - Portable anemometer.
- Sonometru Bruel&Kjaer 2250.
- Software for making noise maps – LIMA 7812-B and Predictor 7810.
- Synchro plus Simtraffic 9 - Software for the analysis, simulation and modeling of road traffic.
• Design, modeling and research of vehicle systems and components
The Laboratory for Design, Modeling and Research of Vehicle Systems and Components is equipped with graphics stations capable of complex data processing in the shortest time. The laboratory also has specialized programmes for 3D modeling (Catia V5, Creo), for the complex simulation of 1D multiphysics systems (Siemens AMESim), structural analysis (MSC One, Abaqus), multibody simulation (MSC Adams), fluid flow simulation (XFlow Simulia).
